ABOUT 'MARMARİS'

Marmaris is one of Turkey's premier vacation resorts. Marmaris is on a wide peninsula, in a bay with three small islands. It is a delightful place on the sea and the coast is full of mostly deserted hidden coves and inlets and all you need to discover them. There are beautiful sandy beaches

and the water is translucent and the color of turquoise. Marmaris is crowded especially in the summer, but many Europeans spend the winter in Marmaris as it is quieter and more secluded than nearby Bodrum. The population increases to 220,000 in Summers and most hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shops cater to low-cost package holidays, although there are facilities for all budgets.

The growth of tourism in the last few years has transformed Marmaris from a fishing village into a comfortable holiday resort. The streets are wide and lined with trees and not only palms; here plane trees and eucalyptus hold sway. There are numerous cafes, restaurants and entertainment places on the sea front.

In Marmaris, sample the typical Turkish cuisine in one of the marina restaurants and drink raki, anisette, the traditional Turkish was, over ice and diluted with water. Later stroll along the brightly lit and palm-lined promenade and indulge yourself at one of the ice cream vendors. Energetic entertainment at a lively bar or dancing until dawn at a sophisticated disco can end a perfect day. There are many good buys in Marmaris boutiques, colorful bazaars and markets. You can find excellent leather and suede goods, copper and brassware, and jewelry and other objects carved of onyx. Turkish carpets, textiles and embroidery make good handcrafted souvenirs, and the locally produced pine-scented honey called "Cambali" is superb!

Marmaris is also a major center for sailors, one of the most attractive maritime parklands, ideal for water sports and sailing. It makes an excellent starting point for the "Blue Voyage" tour of Aegean coastline. In May, the Marmaris Yacht Charter Show provides an opportunity to meet the yachts' captains and crews. It is a popular wintering location for hundreds of cruising boaters. There are ferry services to the Greek island of Rhodes, and large cruise ships call at the port.
